One of these you may have heard of is PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy. This was once the leader in corrective surgeries, but soon LASIK stole the show. This is because LASIK was able to provide patients the same outcome with less discomfort and less recovery time. However, PRK is still in use and there are reasons for that. Some patients are simply bad candidates for the newer eye surgery and while, on paper it might appear that you are ideal, in reality that might not be the case. Some perfectly healthy, of age people, without eye disease, can find themselves being turned away for the laser procedure because of too-thin corneas, which makes it very difficult to create the infamous flap used in LASIK surgeries. The PRK procedure does not rely on that flap and thus it can be a good alternative for those with this condition. Another alternative for these people is LASEK, which stands for laser epithelial keratomileusis. Your Austin optometrist will be able to tell you more about this procedure and whether it is right for you, but essentially, it is the newer version of PRK. With PRK no flap is cut at all. Instead the reshaping is done directly to the eye’s surface. With LASEK, the thin layer that is simply folded back in LASIK, is instead removed entirely and replaced at the end of the procedure.

For those who have problems with vision at varying distances, there is a newer version of LASIK, which addresses all distances. This is called multifocal LASIK and it creates essential zones on the cornea for seeing at different distances. In this way visions needed for reading and distance are addressed. In the near future there will likely be another alternative for people that will require even less invasiveness and even less recovery time. These corneal inlays and onlays are similar to contact lenses, except that they do not require the person to regularly remove them, or even care for them. Once in place, they can be left alone permanently. However, unlike IOL (intraocular lenses), inlays and onlays can rest on the surface of the eye as opposed to being inserted under the corneal flap. Furthermore, this new corrective eye procedure would come with fewer possible complications and would be more applicable for more people.
