Cataracts are definitely not something that anyone wants to have, but thousands of people every year are diagnosed with cataracts and find themselves looking for a cataract surgeon to help them to rid themselves of the debilitating condition. Cataracts are something that affects many people, and yet more people are unsure about what cataracts are, and how they’re treated, than there are people who understand cataracts and what they are.
What Are Cataracts?
A cataract is basically a clouding that you get on your eye. Have you ever taken a camera out of your bag in a humid area, like an indoor pool, and immediately tried to take a picture of it? The picture that you get is unclear and cloudy because there is fog on the lens. A cataract is much like having fog directly on your lens. When you get a cataract, a clouding develops on the part of the eye that helps you to focus. It comes in a wide array of different levels of the condition. Those who are just starting to get a cataract may have only a slight amount of fogginess or cloudiness in their eyes. Those who have been dealing with the condition for awhile, however, can have their eyes so clouded that they are unable to see at all.
There is, however, a blessing in regards to cataracts. If you see your Austin eye doctor on a regular basis, they will be able to catch the cataracts early. Cataracts tend to progress slowly, and if they are caught early they can be treated as soon as they are what is considered “ripe”. This means that the eye doctor can take care of the cataract so that you no longer have to deal with clouding or any near-sightedness that has been caused by the cataract.
Treating Cataracts
Much in the same way that Austin glaucoma doctors treat their patients, the best option for someone who has cataracts is surgery. Cataract surgery removes the lens that has been affected and replaces it with a plastic lens that is clear, allowing the patient to see again. The surgery is fairly quick and the patient is able to go back to their daily routine within a day or so, with only minor restrictions for the short term. One thing that is tricky about cataracts is that they can’t often be treated right at the beginning of the condition. Eye surgeons want to wait until the cataract is ripe, or ready for surgery, in order to give the patient the best results possible.
Many times the same eye doctor will be qualified to treat a number of different eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. If you visit your eye doctor on a regular basis, they will be able to ascertain if you have any of these conditions, and will be able to monitor your eyesight so that you can avoid having to deal with the loss of eyesight.
